Serenity's Spa: Beauty Salon is a time management game for Android. Serenity has just opened up her new spa, and is excited to build up her self-care empire! Complete various challenging levels, dashing around your spa while juggling your customers' requests. Upgrade your spa as you progress, unlocking new stations, services and even an assistant!

I joined the team from the game's initial development over the duration of 3 months, taking responsibility of designing the game's core systems, customers and game loop. This involved developing rough concepts and diagrams in Miro, then formalising their design in documentation on Sharepoint before finally implementing them within Unity alongside our programmers and artists.

Please note the content on this page showcases the state of the project as it was released as a first testable in October 2022. This work is not necessarily final and may change in future updates.

Responsibilities

Developing Systems and Customers  - I designed the functionality of each of the game's service stations, as well as the behaviours of each customer. This involved writing narrative conceits for each element in Miro, then determining what variables we'd need for balancing within engine. We then gathered feedback from other disciplines, and revised our designs for implementation.

Iterating on the Game Loop and Level  - Early on I created a sandbox level used for proving design assumptions to improve the game loop. From here as a design team we workshopped how customer flow should work to ensure ease of play and visibility of customer status. I then used in-engine prototyping tools to greybox several test levels, eventually deciding upon the one that best suited the gameplay for the first testable. Later on I worked with the artists to implement final art onto our prefabbed stations and environments to polish up the level.

Documentation upkeep in Wiki form - As a design team we were tasked with developing documentation for each gameplay feature in the form of a Sharepoint wiki. This included future-planning for future features in later releases such as live ops and customisation, as well as core mechanics such as currency and lives. This documentation was used as a source of truth for the entire development team, so we regularly updated it as we iterated on the game.
